Imagining The Otherwise

Imagining the Otherwise is a five-month, multilingual writers' cohort co-hosted with Intrasentido. Between late 2025 and early 2026, eight storytellers, cultural workers, and community organisers came together through monthly virtual sessions and collective writing to explore what safety and security could look like beyond punishment, surveillance, and fear.

What happens when people across eight countries sit down to write about safety without police, borders without walls, justice without prisons?

THE TERRAIN

The cohort moved through five thematic territories, each one opening a different way into the question of what safety means and who gets to define it.

Stories as a living organism

Starting with the body as a site of knowledge. The cohort explored how stories live in us physically, how trauma and resistance are carried somatically, and how writing can begin from sensation rather than argument.

Getting in trouble

Turning toward disruption. This module drew on traditions of creative disobedience, Indigenous resistance practices, and the long history of using art and language to challenge what is taken for granted.

Resistances

Looking at how communities have built safety on their own terms. From archival practices that preserve erased histories to collective care systems that exist outside the state, the group explored what resistance looks like when it is sustained, and rooted in everyday life.

Staying with the trouble

Sitting with discomfort rather than rushing to resolve it. Informed by feminist philosophy and abolitionist thought, this module asked what it means to hold complexity, contradiction, and grief as part of the work of imagining otherwise.

Worlds of possibilities

Writing forward. The final module turned to speculative fiction, visioning exercises, and collective imagination as tools for building the worlds the group had been describing throughout the cohort.
